some background informations
After my presentation in The Hague Peter Troxler asked me for more background informations - more about the meaning „behind the images“ I showed.
Some lines concerning his question:
One chapter I called „context of time“. I mentioned a quote from the french scholastic Pierre Dubois:
„100.000.000 people should have enough diverse knowledge and skills so that only in a harmonic cooperation between them a society will be working.“
This quote is part of an (peace-) utopia, he wrote this in 1306.
Meaning:
„best is, to differentiate the skills of people as far as everybody is available of own specific skills, that all others will be dependet by them.“
His theory was on two principles. One sharing knowledge (this belongs to the quote) . And the second was religious: he wanted to reformate the churches. He wanted to disempower the roman church.
Piere Dubois was one of the first known persons, who discribed a vision for a unificated europe.
I think, it is amazing, that „sharing knowledge“ and organising this, is such a important part in his utopias. And 700 years later we find lots of similarities in the structure of the EU.
FabLab is a „sharing knowledge-system“ already! It is a platform to bring different disciplines and cultures together. It is a platform with free access for many followers all over the world.
And I think, it is a very peacefull idea. I really believe in the relation between sharing knowledge and peace!
Creative-Pool is the vision, to build up a sharing-knowledge-system by integrating the expertise of fablab users and related neighbors. I call this the „cultural atmosphere“ around FabLab. FabLab is alredy a worthful platform, and point of intersection. Creative Pool probably can be an application to enlarge this feature.
I think, we should have a look to the context of our time more precisely:
In my presentation I mentioned four terms concerning the time, we live in:
Individualization – Digitalization – Globalization - Spezialization
Some lines about these terms:
Compare to the time of Dubois, we have lots of different disciplines. It needs strong efford, to bring them together, cause often they are too much isolated.
One thing what the german carindustry is doing well, is organising this. The way, how they organise this, is their strength. During development-processes they find a positive way to organize collaboration.
What is the meaning for us, if we talk about personal fabrication? How could users start contact to others by sharing expertise? How could they get information and inspiration with high quality? How is to organize an overview to pick up knowledge for a specific interest? How will they be able to create innovations in collaboration with other disciplines?
I think, if we talk about „learn-make-share“ (stolen out of the beautyfull dutch fab-yearbook) we have to talk about two aspects:
First is: how to enlarge or system, how to bring access and an interest to more people (with low threshold), to start an easy way into personal fabrication
Second is: how to cultivate this, how to bring quality into the system.
I think the contribution from Vicente Guallart at fab6 was important. How to integrate design with high quality....?
How to use the platform effective by support from colleagues in collaboration with related disciplines on an advanced level?
Maybe a structure like creative pool can give an answer: Groups with specific interests should find a platform and forum here for their specific needs.
The globalized world is our context. Digitalization belongs to it.
I think, orientation is important! Compare to the time of Dubois, individual destiny feels different today. We are more reverberatory to ourself.
Personal fabrication is a chance to create individual products. It gives open space to do your own stuff , independed from the industry. And maybe it is a platform to learn about own individual potential.
I think, people need a well cultivated atmosphere to do their thing. We live in a individualized world, but we are still looking for social backgrounds. People prefer milieus to work in. They love to be part of them, they love to be asked for personal contribution! Creative Pool should be an invitation to take part and to share expertise.
